Organisational structure and activities
For the discharge of its functions, the Assembly appoints a Bureau, a Presidential Committee, a Standing Committee and six permanent committees. It is assisted by the Secretariat-General.
- The Bureau is composed of the President, elected for one year (renewable twice), and of ten Vice-Presidents. The current President is Mr Jean-Pierre MASSERET, who took up office on 7 December 2005.
- The Presidential Committee is the steering body of the Assembly. The Presidential Committee sets the dates and establishes the agenda for the plenary sessions.
- The Standing Committee, composed of the members of the Presidential Committee and members of the Assembly, acts on behalf of the Assembly between plenary sessions.
The six committees which prepare reports and recommendations are the :
The Assembly holds two plenary sessions per year (in June and December). Depending on current political events it also convenes in plenary for extraordinary sessions. The parliamentarians meet throughout the year in committee for working sessions. In addition, the Assembly organises colloquies that bring together parliamentarians, experts and government representatives as well as media representatives to discuss topical issues of security policy. The topics at recent colloquies have been the response to new risks in international security and defence policy, and European armaments cooperation.
